Public Demonstration of Emergency Communications – June 27–28

The Town of Three Rivers is pleased to host the Amateur Radio Field Day organized by the Island Radio Club at the Georgetown Civic Centre (36 Kent Street) on June 27–28.

During this annual event, local amateur radio operators (HAMs) will join thousands across Canada and the United States in a 24-hour emergency communications exercise designed to simulate communications during natural disasters and major outages.

By 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 27, the HAM’s at Georgetown will have set up antennas and radios connected to commercial power. In an actual emergency generators, batteries, and solar energy can be used to make contacts across North America using voice, Morse code and satellites all without relying on cell service or the internet.

The public is encouraged to stop by, meet local HAM operators, see the equipment in action, and even try making a radio contact themselves!

Amateur radio continues to play an important role in emergency preparedness and backup communications for organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross and emergency measures groups.

We encourage everyone to come out and learn more about this fascinating hobby and important community service.
