The Town of Three Rivers is deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Cardigan Fire Chief Tony VandenBroek.  Tony was a dedicated leader, a committed volunteer, and a trusted protector of the Cardigan community and surrounding areas. His decades of service reflect the very best of the volunteer fire service—courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to keeping others safe.

Chief VandenBroek was known not only for his steady leadership during emergencies, but also for his tireless work behind the scenes to strengthen the Cardigan Fire Department. He was deeply committed to ensuring firefighters had the best trucks and equipment available, always advocating for the tools needed to keep both responders and the community safe. Tony was also instrumental in pursuing the much-needed addition to the Fire Department building, working persistently to ensure the department’s future needs would be met.

On behalf of Council, staff, and the residents of Three Rivers, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Tony’s family, his fellow firefighters at the Cardigan Fire Department, and the many friends and neighbours whose lives he touched.

The Town has lowered flags to half-mast in his honour. We will continue to work closely with the Cardigan Fire Department and the family to support them in the difficult days ahead and will share information regarding arrangements when available.

Chief Tony VandenBroek’s dedication, leadership, and love for his community will never be forgotten.

May he rest in peace.
